Dual professionalism showcases

IfL members are often dual professionals, both highly qualified teachers as well as being experts in their initial profession – their subject specialism.

IfL has worked with a number of other professional bodies to showcase the work of our members, their route into teaching, and the role of CPD in their dual professionalism.

Jane Smith, FlfL, FlnstLM

Originally managing staff at Central Television, Jane went on to take a part-time diploma in management studies and then an MA in education and professional development. She now teaches management and practises it, all in one job at Birmingham Metropolitan College.

Mark Joseph MIfL, MICPHE, RP

At 16 Mark took a plumbing course which he didn’t complete, but went on later to take a degree and PGCE and become a school teacher. When he decided to move on from this he went back to his first love plumbing and is now a teacher at Havering College of Further and Higher Education.

Tracey Richardson, MIfL, AICPHE, RP

During 22 years as a technician in the RAF, Tracey decided she wanted to become a teacher and took a part-time Certificate in Education, followed up by a PGCE. On leaving she then took a City & Guilds course, worked part-time as a plumber and embarked on an NVQs and Gas Safe registration. Now a plumbing teacher at Rodbaston College she is at the final stages of a further studies and QTLS.

These are only the first of a range of showcases for our members’ dual professionalism. If you would like to share your story please contact communications@ifl.ac.uk
