IfL’s deputy chief executive has been installed as president of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) for a one-year term, after serving as vice-president of the professional body for the UK plumbing and heating industry for the past year. Lee Davies, who has been with IfL for six years, started his career in plumbing as an indentured apprentice with Portsmouth City Council in the early 1980s. He gained his advanced plumbing qualifications at Highbury College Portsmouth, where he later started teaching part-time evening classes and progressed to a full-time teaching position. As well as being a Fellow of IfL, Mr Davies is a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). In 2009 he was honoured by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh in the City and Guilds of London Institute’s ‘Prince Philip Medal’ awards for his contribution to education and training. He said, “I would like to make education and learning a major theme of my year in office. It is my belief that the CIPHE must have an active role in the education and training of new plumbers if it is to be relevant and credible to future members. Teachers and trainers who are members of both the CIPHE and IfL are dual professionals who have an important role in training the next generation of plumbers, heating engineers, consultants and designers to stay up to date with environmental and technological challenges. I am looking forward to my year as president, and will relish the opportunities it affords to highlight the importance of top-quality training.”
