*Mapping is carried out QCF level to QCF level.  Where the qualification being mapped is not on the QCF and therefore does not have an Ofqual regulated level, the level descriptors given in Appendix E of the Ofqual document: Regulatory arrangements for the Qualification and Credit Framework will be used to determine an indicative level.  However, this indicative level cannot be applied directly to the qualification by the awarding organisation.

Restrictions and Clarifications

The Tariff maps work within the following restrictions and clarifications and must only be read or used in conjunction with them.

Purpose of the maps

These maps are produced to show how initial teaching/training qualifications relate to the units of the revised 2011 FE teaching qualifications.  The main purpose of the maps is in relation to the requirements for membership grading and eligibility for teachers and trainers with these qualifications wishing to undertake professional formation leading to Associate Teacher Learning and Skills (ATLS) or Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.   For more information on ATLS or QTLS, please visit the IfL website: Gaining ATLS or QTLS

Assessment of Prior Learning or Accreditation (APEL or APA)

The maps may also be used as a guide by ITT providers to determine eligibility for APEL or APA.  Please note that the Tariff maps are advisory and not mandatory.  Each Awarding Institution (AI) works within its own policy on APEL or APA.

Requirements for open optional units and assessed teaching practice are not covered by Tariff mapping.  AIs are advised to establish that requirements for these areas are met through their own processes.  AIs are reminded that the responsibility and justification for exemptions declared and/or credit transfer remains with them.  Please refer to the LSIS guidance document for information: LSIS Guidance documents (opens in new window)

Minimum Core

The FE teaching qualifications include a strong focus on the minimum core i.e. literacy, language, numeracy and ICT skills, both the personal skills of teachers and the support and development of these skills by teachers in their learners. The guidance on addressing the minimum core in initial teacher training programmes is available on the Excellence Gateway: Minimum Core Guidance (opens in new window)

As these are ‘working’ skills, there is often no explicit mention of these as specific learning outcomes in the specifications of teaching qualification delivered in the wider sector. However, where there is evidence of opportunities to practise the skills and develop the essential understanding covered by the minimum core elements within the programme, this is accepted for mapping the requirements relating to the minimum core.
