LSIS STAR Awards - 2009 shortlist announced

The Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) has announced the shortlist for the annual STAR Awards. The IfL sponsored category of ‘Teaching, training and learning practitioner’ reflects the diversity and creativity of the sector, ranging from a lip-reading tutor in an FE college (learner nomination) to an apprentice technical trainer at Volkswagen (peer nomination). This is the first time the category has been split to include both peer and learner nominations.

“Its fantastic that such a variety of teaching and training roles and subjects have been recognised by their peers and learners,” says Lee Davies, Deputy Chief Executive of the IfL. “This is evidence of the very real difference that teachers and trainers are maked across the further education and skills sector.”

The full list is available on the LSIS Excellence Gateway (opens in a new window).

Three regional celebration events for the short-listed nominees and their nominators will be held in Leeds, Birmingham and London on 7, 8 and 9 October respectively. The events will celebrate the achievements of all those who have made the short list and be hosted by a local celebrity.

The overall category winners will then be announced at a glittering national awards ceremony at Old Billingsgate in London on Thursday 26 November.

“I am delighted that the people short-listed for the 2009 LSIS STAR Awards will have the national spotlight shining on them,” says Dr David Collins, chief executive of LSIS. "They are providing the skills that our learners need to help them achieve their full potential and drive our economic success. They should, rightly, feel valued to have been identified as ‘STARs’. I am also heartened to see that nominations came from all parts of our wide and diverse sector and am pleased the judges found that the standard and quality is higher than ever. I warmly congratulate all of them and look forward to meeting them at the national ceremony on 26 November when the winners are announced.”

Last year’s awards saw Jean Bartley, a tutor on a learning support course at Herefordshire College of Technology, scoop the Teaching, training and learning practitioner award.
