IfL announces new non-executive board

Friday 14 May 2010

The Institute for Learning (IfL) has announced the results of the election for its new non-executive board.

The nine member representatives on the non-executive board are:

  • Govind Bharadia
  • Anne Brookes
  • John Chorley
  • Sue Crowley
  • Lisette D’Cruz
  • Rania Hafez
  • Jacki Hughes
  • Professor Ed Sallis OBE
  • Mick Smith.

The three stakeholder representatives are:

  • Martin Doel OBE
  • James Noble-Rogers
  • Dan Taubman MBE.

The elected Advisory Council has been in place since January 2010 and its 60 members are the members of the not-for-profit company, as registered at Companies House. The new non-executive board will take over from the previous Council in June 2010, and will include three co-opted members, to be selected shortly.

Toni Fazaeli, chief executive of IfL, said, "The election of a non-executive board completes the establishment of our new governance structure, which was designed, in consultation with members, to allow better member representation, a greater focus on policy matters, and cost savings that can be used to develop valuable member benefits.

"The role of the non-executive board is to provide strategic direction for IfL and to guide business probity. Some of its work, such as audit, will be directed through sub-committees, as needed. My colleagues and I look forward to working with the non-executive board."

Sue Crowley, chair of IfL's Council, said, "The establishment of a non-executive board, with a large majority of teachers and trainers, is a very positive development for IfL and for the profession. The election of some current Council members to the board gives us good continuity, and I know that there will be plenty of fresh ideas and challenges from the newcomers, as well as from those who have served longer in IfL’s governance. The depth and breadth of the non-executive board members' expertise is exactly what we need for IfL, the professional body for teachers and trainers across further education and skills, for the next phase of our success."

The next non-executive board election will take place in spring 2012.
