ITT - Initial Teacher Training
A key priority for us as a professional body is to ensure that the teaching and training profession is properly developed and sustained. This means paying close attention to how individuals enter our sector as teachers and trainers and influencing policy makers to ensure that teaching and training is an attractive and rewarding career move.
In November 2010 we invited members to share their views on how well they thought ITT worked for the sector. Over 5,000 members shared their thoughts on pre-service and in-service ITT, with 83% saying they thought FE ITT worked fairly to very well. The findings were shared with the Skills Commission Parliamentary Seminar on Initial Teacher Training in the House of Commons in December 2010 and a report has been produced for members.
With rises in HE and FE tuition fees announced in 2011, IfL responded to the government consultations Attracting, training and retaining the best teachers and New challenges, new chances: next steps in implementing the further education reform programme to raise serious concerns about the impact this would have on the a sector’s ability to attract experts from industry into the teaching workforce when ITT tuition fees rise significantly from 2012, and the lack of parity between teacher training opportunities in different parts of the education sector. IfL is working with Universities Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET) to ask Ministers to review the impact ITT tuition fees will have on the sector and any provision that could be provided to support highly skilled individuals wishing to teach or train in FE.
